Central to Supersonics’ work with volunteers is the knowledge that without their support much of what the festival delivers would not be possible, therefore they’re keen that volunteers embrace and experience as much of the activity on offer. Positive feedback from those involved, ranging from artists, sound techs, venues, food vendors and volunteers is the best advocacy for the work the festival achieves.
Alongside the festival team I coordinated the recruitment, appointment and management of volunteers in the lead up to and during the festival weekend. I followed up with applicants to secure references and availability. I worked closely with the Festival Manager to ensure that all areas of the festival were adequately staffed, as well as devising and populating rotas.
I initiated and maintained clear communication in the lead up to the festival including providing an onsite orientation session where volunteers received information about the festival site, line up and clarified queries. I scheduled relevant training and ensured that volunteers were briefed on health, safety and safeguarding procedures.
The nature of a festival requires individuals who are able to calmly adapt to change. Where possible I built in capacity to ensure volunteers were available to cover gaps in resources but also quickly responded to any adjustments in schedule and resources. I set up and maintained a hub throughout the festival where volunteers could check into shifts, get refreshments or time away from their public facing roles. Following the festival I assisted in gathering feedback for evaluation and to improve the festivals volunteer offer for future years.
